Who doesn’t want their makeup to last as long as possible? It’s not something that I think about a lot but I have makeup on my face for the vast majority of the day…from about 8am to sometimes 10pm when I finally take it off before bed. If I’m not doing anything after work, I need my face to last at least 9 hours so I’m all about tricks to help make my makeup last longer. I have put together a list of five products that make your makeup last longer so you’ll be able to worry less about fixing and be confident that everything will stay in its place.
There are a ton of primers to choose from these days. Pick one that suits your skin type and that gives you the look you are trying to achieve (matte, radiant, natural, etc.). I have been using a primer under my foundation for years and find it makes a huge difference in preparing my skin for foundation as well as keeping things under control all day long. Right now I am using the new FENTY beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer and I LOVE it! It’s so soft and blends so nicely. My skin is a little on the oily side in the t-zone so I like that it’s oil free and helps to absorb shine throughout the day. Some of my other favourites are the Becca Backlight Filter Primer (I did a post on this primer here) and the Benefit POREfessional face primer.
Translucent or setting powder is also something that I always, always, always use. I went through a phase where I watched a lot of beauty vloggers on youtube…like alot! Jaclyn Hill is one of my favourites and she was using the RCMA No-Color powder in so many of her videos and she talked a lot about how much she loved it so I decided to give it a try. It is amazing and so, so, affordable. I’ve been using the same container of powder for almost two years now and I still have lots left. I use it with a large brush to set my foundation and concealer all over my face, adding a little bit of extra powder under my eyes and on my nose, chin and forehead. It’s also great for baking any area of your face or to make lipstick last all day. Apply a coat of lipstick, dust some powder overtop with a small shadow brush and apply another coat of lipstick overtop. It will last a long, long time which is especially great if you’re wearing a bold lip.
Another must-have for keeping your makeup lasting all day. There seems to be a lot of these on the market as well but the one I have been using and really liking is the Kat Von D Lock-it setting spray. I like how it’s a fine mist that sprays out and feels really refreshing on my face. Again, find one that fits your skin type..there are hydrating ones, cooling, mattifying, and so on. I have also used the Urban Decay setting sprays and M.A.C. Prep and Prime Fix + mist. I have liked them all but sometimes like to try different things rather than sticking with one product all the time.
This one isn’t as much of a “necessity” but I use it everyday because there’s nothing worse than looking in the mirror and seeing your eyebrows astray. After filling in my brows I use the clear Anastasia BH Brow Gel to keep all hairs in place. It works like a charm and if you have fuller brows like I do it’s something that won’t take you long to get hooked on.
Yes, this is different from my regular face primer (which I could probably use but don’t because I’m a product junkie and like spending $$$ at Sephora). When I first started wearing makeup as a teenager I would get so frustrated that my eyeshadow would crease throughout the day. If I hadn’t discovered the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer (I use “minor sin”) this would still happen to me. I like that this one has a little bit of a shimmer. I also use this everyday and my eyeshadow always stays in place. A must-have if you have oily skin which often causes shadows to crease throughout the day.
If you have any tricks to help keep your face looking fresh all day I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
